People of Walkerston can be comfortable knowing that they have the backing of one of Australia’s most iconic companies when it comes to water storage and water solutions.
Many Queensland residents still look to a Southern Cross water tank to help meet their water storage needs, because they are mindful of their water storage requirements, and reliability.
Formerly known as Scrubby Creek, due to its rugged bushland, Walkerston was founded by cattlemen on the search of cattle runs, who had travelled up from New South Wales in the 1860’s.

Water Storage Challenges

While most people delight in rainfall, thanks to modern infrastructure like roadways and paving, too much rain can cause flash flooding, which may be harmful to homes and the local ecosystem.
Installing a roof gutter system and a rainwater tank can help in reducing the amount of water building up from stormwater run-off, and decrease the likelihood of flash flooding.
Much like many of its neighbours, tropical cyclones often threaten Walkerston, and in past years have resulted in flash flooding and water run off that has put homes and backyards under water.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer

Due to Australia’s climate of long hot summers, bushfires are a consistent threat, and Walkerston is no exception. Despite much of the rainfall coming in the summer months, this can result in longer grasses which freely catch alight.

Fortunately, Southern Cross are the fire tank experts, and can effectively and proficiently fit your property or residence with a fire tank to help protect you from wildfires.
If a bushfire has passed through your property, it is advised that you get your water quality checked for safety if you wish to carry on using it for household water. Having said that it will still be safe for gardening or fire security.
The Walkerston climate
Situated some 14km South West of Mackay, Walkerston experiences similar weather, despite being slightly further inland, with long warm summers, and mild dry winters.
The rainfall in Walkerston is more than plentiful, averaging over 1600mm annually, thanks to large wet season rainfalls and cyclones that pass by the area.
Despite the bountiful rainfall, Walkerston experiences a large number of clear or sunny days all year round, which is what would have made it so attractive to Maltese farmers setting up their lives in the area in the late 1800’s.

Over 100 years of experience
In 1903, the original Southern Cross windmill was manufactured by the Griffiths family at the Toowoomba Foundry, and soon after so was the first Southern Cross water tank, leaving us with unparalleled experience in taking care of towns like Walkerston’s water storage needs.
Southern Cross has been home to over 50 years of innovation when it comes to Bolted Steel Round Water Tanks, with our first model being built in the late 60’s.
When Squatter Tanks were introduced to Australia, it provided people with a reliable and economical way of storing large amounts of water, and some of these tanks still remain to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the Southern Cross brand was born of the Toowoomba Foundry, there was no little chance the Griffiths family could have foreseen the brand going on the become an iconic Australian business, still operation over a hundred years later.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, servicing Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to business on commercial sites – even educational institutions.
Reliable in a pinch

When a water tank constructed by one of our competitors at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffered structural failure in 2015, the tank ruptured, inundating Kawana Way with approximately two and a half million litres of water, resulting in damaging flooding, and even sweeping away a family vehicle.

Following this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to build two new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the standard for many commercial projects from that point onward.
