For over a century , Southern Cross have been designing and building water tanks Marian residents can trust.
Residents of Marian know that they have the support of one of Australia’s most recognisable names in water collection and water storage solutions.

The town of Marian was originally named after the (no longer operational) train station in the area, rather than vice versa. It was a stop on one of Queensland’s many sugar cane tramways.

While many people delight in rainfall, thanks to modern infrastructure like roads and paving, too much rain can cause flash flooding, which can be harmful to homes and the local environment.
If you set up a water tank and connect it up to a guttering system, you can help lower the build up of water from rainwater run off, and reduce the possibility of flash flooding.
The Pioneer River, which Marian is built on, has a well documented history of flooding, with the earliest recorded cases dating back as far as 1884, and new roadways and estates can prevent this water from soaking into the ground as effectively.

Regrettably, due to much of Australia’s climate, bushfires are a constant risk in the long, hot summers, and Marian is no different. Despite most of the region’s rains coming in the summer months, the lush grasses and scorching days can quickly cause brushfires.

In the aftermath of a bushfire it is advised to get your water assessed for safety if you’re going to be utilising it for potable or drinking water. Having said that it will still be safe to use for watering the garden or fire security.
The Marian climate
A short drive West of Mackay, Marian experiences similar weather to many towns in the Mackay Region, with long warm summers, and mild dry winters.
Marian typically recieves a large amount of wet season rainfall in the summer months, averaging an annual rainfall of well over 1500mm, bringing about ample water supply for rainwater storage.
Despite the bountiful rainfall, Marian experiences a large number of clear or sunny days all year round, which led to it being an attractive proposition to early sugar mill operators in the area.

Over 100 years of experience
In 1903, the original Southern Cross windmill was manufactured by the Griffiths family at the Toowoomba Foundry, and soon after so was the first Southern Cross water tank, leaving us with unparalleled expertise in taking care of towns like Marian’s water storage needs.
In the late 60’s, we built the first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank, and have welcomed over half a centuty of innovation and improvement since then.
Squatter Tanks were a cutting edge way for Australians to store vast quantities of water in an effecting and affordable manner – a number of these tanks are still standing to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

There was no way anyone could have forecasted the birth of an Australian icon when the Griffiths family watched the very first windmill roll off the Toowoomba Foundry line over a century ago.

As an Australian owned brand who still operate out of Loganholme to this day, Southern Cross is proud to help all manner of Australians with their water storage needs, from farms and irrigators to commercial sites and mine projects.
Reliable in a pinch

In 2015 at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a water tank built by one of our competitors suffered a structural failure, leading the tank to rupture, flooding roughly 2.5 million litres of water to flood Kawana Way, causing wreckage, and even washing away a family car.

Following this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to build a pair of new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the standard for many commercial projects from that point forward.

Marian Local Knowledge

The Marian station and sugar mill were named after a property in the area called Mary Ann.

The sugar mill still in operation in Marian today is one of Australia’s largest, producing over 2 million tonnes of sugar annually.
