Water Storage Challenges

While most people delight in rainfall, due to modern infrastructure like roads and paving, too much rain can cause flash flooding, which may be harmful to homes and the local ecosystem.
By attaching a roof gutter system, and connecting it up to a rainwater tank, you can help prevent large amount of storm water run-off and minimise the likelihood of flash flooding.
Whilst typically quite dry, Cloncurry has been known to experience heavy downfalls a couple of times per decade, with Monsoonal rain in 2019 causing flash flooding across the region, and closing roads in the town.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer
Due to Australia’s climate of long hot summers, bushfires are a consistent danger, and Cloncurry is no exception. Despite having much of the rainfall coming in the summer months, this can lead to longer grasses which freely catch alight.

The Cloncurry climate
Cloncurry hosts a hot semi-arid climate, and was for along time famous for recording Australia’s hottest ever temperature. Whilst that myth has long since been debunked, Cloncurry still frequently registers temperatures well in excess of 40 degrees.
Cloncurry averages just over 500mm of annual rainfall, which typically falls in the summer months. The area is so dry, that in extreme cases, whole months can pass without a drop of rain.
Due to local water sources keeping grasses in the area growing, Cloncurry is well serviced by a cattle grazing industry, which has taken over from the once productive uranium mines in the region.

As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy
When the Southern Cross brand was born of the Toowoomba Foundry, there was no little chance the Griffiths family could have foreseen the brand going on the become an iconic Australian business, still operation over a hundred years later.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, servicing Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to business on industrial sites– even educational institutions.
Reliable in a pinch
In 2015 at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a water tank built by one of our competitors suffered a structural failure, leading the tank to rupture, flooding roughly 2.5 million litres of water to flood Kawana Way, causing destruction, and even washing away a family vehicle.

After this catastrophe, the sites developer looked to Southern Cross to design and build two new water storage tanks for the site, and the requirements and quality these tanks had to conform to set the benchmark for many subsequent commercial projects.

Cloncurry Local Knowledge

Much more than just a rural mining town, Cloncurry is the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and there is an exhibit in the town for any wishing to learn more about the history of the Australian icon.
Cloncurry boasts a massive 11 working mines, making it the most geologically rich town in Outback Queensland.
