Despite being extremely dry, occasionally monsoonal weather causes annual rainfalls to triple, with flash flooding seen in the area as recently as early 2020.

Regrettably, as a result of much of Australia’s climate, bushfires are a steady risk in the long, hot summers, and Boulia is no exception. Despite much of the region’s rains coming in the summer months, the lush grasses and warm days can easily cause brushfires.

Fortunately, Southern Cross are the fire tank specialists, and can thoroughly and proficiently fit your property or home with a fire tank to help protect you from wildfires.
If a bushfire has passed through your property, it is advised that you get your water quality checked for safety if you wish to carry on using it for household water. However it will still be safe for gardening or fire protection.

The Boulia climate

Boulia’s climate is very hot and dry, bordering on arid, with annual rainfall historically having dipped below 50mm, with the summer months often rocketing above 45 degrees, and over 200 days a year above 30.
Boulia’s rainfall is extremely eratic, despite the average sitting around 260mm a year, the region has experienced annual totals as high as 799mm, and as low as 24mm.
Despite how dry the region is, Boulia is serviced by extensive beef grazing, with the Mitchell Grass Plains considered as one of the finest beef producing areas in the country.

Over 100 years of experience
Over 100 years ago, the first Southern Cross water tank was manufactured by the Griffiths family, after they had experienced success with their Southern Cross windmills in 1903. This gives Southern Cross unique perspective and expertise in handling Australian and Boulia’s water storage requirements.
Our first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank was built in the late 60’s, and since then Southern Cross has been home to more than 50 years of continued innovation.
When Squatter Tanks were introduced to Australia, it provided people with an effective and economical way of storing substantial amounds of water, and some of these tanks still remain to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy
There was no way anyone could have predicted the birth of an Australian icon when the Griffiths family watched the very first windmill roll off the Toowoomba Foundry line over a century ago.

Not only does Southern Cross still operate out of Loganholme, we are an Australian owned company, servicing Australians from all walks of life, including irrigators, families, schools and many more.
Reliable in a pinch
In 2015, a water storage tank at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital sustained a structiral failure, causing the tank to flood the nearby Kawana Way with somewhere around two and a half million litres of water, washing away a family vehicle and causing destruction to the surroundings.

After this catastrophe, the sites developer turned to Southern Cross to design and manufacture two new water storage tanks for the site, and the requirements and quality these tanks had to conform to set the requirement for many subsequent commercial projects.
