The populace of Queensland understand their water storage requirements, and due to this, many still turn to a Southern Cross water tank to aid them in meeting their water harvesting needs.
Situated atop the Great Artesan Basin, Winton is home to several dinosaur dig sites, and the Diamantina River ring feature is theorised to be a major event in the planet’s geological history.

Water Storage Challenges

Rain is a welcome sight for most people across Queensland, but as a result of modern conveniences like as roads and paving, significant rain can bring about flash flooding, endangering homes and the ecosystem.
Installing a roof gutter system and a rainwater tank can help reduce the amount of water building up from stormwater run-off, and decrease the risk of flash flooding.
Monsoonal weather can often cause flash flooding in the area, and can be traced back as far as the town’s founders, who complained of the heavy rainfall complicating settling.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer
Due to Australia’s climate of long hot summers, bushfires are a continuous possibility, and Winton is no exception. Despite having much of the rainfall coming in the summer months, this can lead to longer grasses which easily catch alight.

Southern Cross Water are specialists when it relates to fire tanks, and can install a fire tank for your home or industrial space to help defend your property in the event of bushfire.
If a bushfire has passed through your property, it is encouraged that you get your water quality examined for safety if you wish to continue using it for household water. Having said that it will still be safe for gardening or fire protection.
The Winton climate
Winton is classified as a hot semi-arid climate, with year round temperatures often reaching above 30 degrees, and even in winter seldom dropping below 20.
The annual rainfall of Winton is just over 400mm a year, but the figures are eratic due to sporatic monsoonal seasons often causing much higher figures on some years than others.
The Winton area is predominantly flat grassland, built around a braided river system, which lends itself well to graziers, with sheep and cattle raising prevalent in the area.

Over 100 years of experience
From the inaugural Southern Cross windmill rolling off the Toowoomba Foundry line in 1903, and the first Southern Cross Water Tank over 100 years ago, nobody has expertise like we do of dealing with Winton and Australia’s unique water storage needs.
In the late 60’s, we built the first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank, and have embraced over half a century of innovation and improvement since then.
When Squatter Tanks were introduced to Australia, it equipped people with an effective and economical way of storing substantial amounts of water, and several of these tanks still remain to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy
When the Griffiths family formed the Southern Cross brand out of the Toowoomba Foundry, they almost certainly didn’t know that it would go on to end up being such an iconic Australian brand, still in operation over a century later.

Not only does Southern Cross still operate out of Loganholme, we are an Australian owned company, servicing Australians from all walks of life, including irrigators, families, schools and many more.
Reliable in a pinch
Disaster struck the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in 2015, when a water tank built by one of our competitors suffered a devastating structural failure, rupturing the tanks and washing approximately 2.5 million litres of destructive water over Kawana way, even sweeping away a family car.

In the wake of this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to construct a pair of new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the standard for many commercial projects from that point forward.
