If you install a water tank and link it up to a guttering system, you can help lessen the build up of water from rainwater run off, and minimise the risk of flash flooding.
Being located so close to the Burdekin River, even the Bureau of Meteorology list Ayr as “occasionally experienc(ing) severe flooding with many houses and businesses affected,” and “Records of large floods at Ayr extend back as far as 1911, and since then 10 major floods have occurred.”

Ayr averages 1077mm of rainfall yearly, with the vast majority of this falling between December and March.
Ayr is the centre of Australia’s largest sugarcane growing region, with Burdekin producing a proportionate chunk of Australia’s sugar.

All Southern Cross tanks are engineered and designed in house, and if required may be engineered for unique locations, including cyclonic or high wind settings, and some seismic conditions.

Over 100 years of experience

The first Southern Cross windmill was manufactured in the Toowoomba Foundry in 1903, and not far behind was the first Southern Cross water tank, meaning nobody knows the extraordinary storage needs of Ayr and Australia like our people do.

With the first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank being produced by Southern Cross in the late 60’s, we’ve been a haven for over fifty years of continued innovation.
When Squatter Tanks were introduced to Australia, it provided individuals with a reliable and economical way of storing large amounds of water, and several of these tanks still remain to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the very first Southern Cross windmill rolled out of the Toowoomba Foundry over an a century ago, there was no way the Griffiths family anticipated the brand to grow to emerge as an Australian icon, and still operating in the 21st century.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, servicing Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to companies on industrial sites – even schools and universities.
Reliable in a pinch

When a water tank constructed by one of our competitors at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffered structural failure in 2015, the tank burst, flooding Kawana Way with approximately two and a half million litres of water, causing damaging flooding, and even sweeping away a family car.

In the wake of this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to construct a pair of new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the standard for many commercial projects from that point forward.

Ayr Local Knowledge

Ayr has been growing large scale sugarcane plantations since 1879, with the formation of the Burdekin Delta Sugar Company, and still produce a large amount of Queensland’s sugar to this day.
