In 2019 a slow moving tropical low and a monsoon combined to cause widespread flooding throughout the Townsville area.

Due to it’s geographical location, and the lack of a lift effect, Townsville has a much drier dry season than most of Queensland, with an average annual rainfall of 1134mm.
Today Townsville is dominated by a more urban economy, with transport, manufacturing and military making up much of the business sector, however due to it’s position on a flood plain, the area was developed to support graziers and farmers.

Over 100 years of experience

From the inaugural Southern Cross windmill coming off the Toowoomba Foundry line in 1903, and the first Southern Cross Water Tank over 100 years ago, nobody has experience like we do of working with Townsville and Australia’s unique water storage needs.

In the late 60’s, we built the first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank, and have welcomed over half a century of innovation and improvement since then.
The first Squatter Tanks provided Australians with effecting and affordable ways of capturing and storing large amounts of water– some of these tanks still stand today!

When the Griffiths family created the Southern Cross brand out of the Toowoomba Foundry, they surely didn’t know that it would continue on to become such an iconic Australian brand, still in operation over a century in the future.

Reliable in a pinch
In 2015 at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a water tank built by one of our competitors suffered a structural failure, causing the tank to rupture, flooding roughly 2.5 million litres of water to flood Kawana Way, causing damage, and even washing away a family car.
After this, the site developer contacted Southern Cross to engineer and build two new tanks for the site, and the quality of these tanks have become a benchmark for many commercial projects from that point to comply with.
