Townsville Water Tanks

The unofficial capital of Northern Queensland, Townsville was established in 1865 on the banks of the Burdekin River to support the thriving inland cattle industry.
For water tanks Townsville can rely on, Southern Cross have been there to supply quality water storage solutions for over a century.
People from Townsville can sleep soundly, knowing they have the support of one of Australia’s most iconic water storage and harvesting companies.
Due to many people in Queensland being mindful of their water harvesting and water storage needs, many still turn to a Southern Cross water tank to help meet their needs.

Water Storage Challenges

While lots of folks delight in rainfall, as a result of modern infrastructure like roads and paving, too much rain can cause flash flooding, which can be harmful to homes and the local environment.
By attaching a roof gutter system, and linking it up to a rainwater tank, you can help prevent large amount of storm water run-off and lessen the possibility of flash flooding.
In 2019 a slow moving tropical low and a monsoon combined to cause widespread flooding throughout the Townsville area.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer

Unfortunately the long hot summers in Townsville leave it, like much of Australia, vulnerable to wide-spread bushfires. Despite the fact that much of Townsville’s rainfall comes in the warmer months, this often leads to long grasses which ignite easily.

Fortunately, Southern Cross are the fire tank experts, and can effectively and proficiently fit your property or residence with a fire tank to help protect you from wildfires.
If a bushfire has passed through your property, it is advised that you get your water quality checked for safety if you intend to continue using it for household water. However it will still be safe for gardening or fire security.
The Townsville climate
Townsville lies in a tropical savanna climate region, with hot wet summers, and mild, much drier winters.
Due to it’s geographical location, and the lack of a lift effect, Townsville has a much drier dry season than most of Queensland, with an average annual rainfall of 1134mm.
Today Townsville is dominated by a more urban economy, with transport, manufacturing and military making up much of the business sector, however due to it’s position on a flood plain, the area was developed to support graziers and farmers.

Over 100 years of experience

From the inaugural Southern Cross windmill coming off the Toowoomba Foundry line in 1903, and the first Southern Cross Water Tank over 100 years ago, nobody has experience like we do of working with Townsville and Australia’s unique water storage needs.

In the late 60’s, we built the first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank, and have welcomed over half a century of innovation and improvement since then.
The first Squatter Tanks provided Australians with effecting and affordable ways of capturing and storing large amounts of water– some of these tanks still stand today!
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the Griffiths family created the Southern Cross brand out of the Toowoomba Foundry, they surely didn’t know that it would continue on to become such an iconic Australian brand, still in operation over a century in the future.

As an Australian owned brand who still operate out of Loganholme to this day, Southern Cross is proud to help all manner of Australians with their water storage needs, from farms and irrigators to commercial sites and mine projects.
Reliable in a pinch
In 2015 at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a water tank built by one of our competitors suffered a structural failure, causing the tank to rupture, flooding roughly 2.5 million litres of water to flood Kawana Way, causing damage, and even washing away a family car.
After this, the site developer contacted Southern Cross to engineer and build two new tanks for the site, and the quality of these tanks have become a benchmark for many commercial projects from that point to comply with.
