Thuringowa Water Tanks

Formerly a city in its own right, Thuringowa now belongs within the city limits of Townsville. Thuringowa was originally named after the German state of Thuringia where the shire’s first chairman heralded from.

Rain is a welcome sight for most people across Queensland, but as a result of modern conveniences such as roads and paving, large amounts of rain can lead to flash flooding, endangering homes and the ecosystem.

In the Townsville floods of 2019, Thuringowa was also an unfortunate bystander in the combination of weather conditions that caused the widespread flooding and stormwater run off.

Thuringowa lies in a tropical savanna climate region, with hot wet summers, and mild, much drier winters.

Due to it’s geographical location, and the lack of a lift effect, Thuringowa has a much drier dry season than most of Queensland, with an average annual rainfall o over 1000mm.

While today existing as a suburb of Townsville, Thuringowa was once a thriving pastoral region, for which the port of Townsville was developed to support.

Over 100 years of experience

The first Southern Cross windmill was manufactured in the Toowoomba Foundry in 1903, and not far behind was the first Southern Cross water tank, meaning nobody knows the extraordinary storage needs of Thuringowa and Australia like we do.

With the first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank being produced by Southern Cross in the late 60’s, we’ve been a haven for over fifty years of continued innovation.

When Squatter Tanks were introduced to Australia, it provided people with a reliable and economical way of storing large amounds of water, and several of these tanks still stand to this day.

As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the Griffiths family created the Southern Cross brand out of the Toowoomba Foundry, they surely didn’t know that it would go on to end up being such an iconic Australian brand, still in operation over a hundred years later.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, assisting Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to business on commercial sites – even educational institutions.

Reliable in a pinch

When a water tank constructed by one of our competitors at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffered structural failure in 2015, the tank ruptured, inundating Kawana Way with approximately two and a half million litres of water, causing damaging flooding, and even sweeping away a family vehicle.

In the wake of the disaster, the developer of the University Hospital site enlisted Southern Cross to engineer and manufacture two new water storage tanks for the site, and the high standard engineering for those tanks has since become a benchmark for future commercial projects to comply to.

Thuringowa Local Knowledge

While in 2007 the State government amalgamated the cities of Thuringowa and Townsville, the mayor of Thuringowa won the ensuing run-off, giving the council a strong voice in the new city.
