Alice River Water Tanks

A rural town on the outskirts of the City of Townsville, Alice River is an estate of homes and hobby farms about 30km inland.
At Southern Cross we’ve been building and designing water tanks Alice River residents can rely on for over a century.
People of Alice River know that they have the support of one of Australia’s most recognisable names in water collection and water storage solutions.
People in Queensland are mindful of their water storage requirements, and because of this, many have, and still look to a Southern Cross water tank to help meet their water storage needs.

Water Tank Sizes

With a range of tank sizes from 26kL – 600kL in our rural tanks, and from 12kL – 1900kL in our commercial tanks (with sizes outside this range available on request) you can rest assured that we have the right size tank to suit your water storage needs.

Water Storage Challenges

Rain is a welcome sight for many people across Queensland, but due to modern conveniences like as roads and paving, too much rain can cause flash flooding, harming homes and the ecosystem.
By installing a roof gutter system, and linking it up to a rainwater tank, you can help prevent large amount of storm water run-off and minimise the possibility of flash flooding.
After widespread flooding in the region in 2019, the Alice River bridge had to be repaired after stormwater runoff caused damage to local infrastructure.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer
Australia is renowned for its long hot summers, but sadly this leaves us susceptible to frequent bushfires and Alice River is no exception. While a lot of the area’s rainfall does fall in the summer months, this leads to lush grasses that can easily burn on the hotter days.
Fortunately, Southern Cross are the fire tank professionals, and can effectively and proficiently fit your property or home with a fire tank to help protect you from wildfires.
If your property is impacted by a bushfire, we recommend that you get your water examined for safety prior to continuing to use it for potable or drinking purposes. The tank will still be appropriate for watering gardens or fire protection.
The Alice River climate
Alice River lies in an inland tropical savanna climate region, with hot wet summers, and mild, much drier winters.
Due to it’s geographical location, and the lack of a lift effect, Alice River has a much drier dry season than most of Queensland – and even slightly drier than that of the Townsville city centre, with an average annual rainfall of over 800mm.
Alice River is built on land that was once used for pastoral and grazing by settlers in the region when nearby Thuringowa and Townsville were developed.

Over 100 years of experience

From the inaugural Southern Cross windmill wheeling off the Toowoomba Foundry line in 1903, and the first Southern Cross Water Tank over 100 years ago, nobody has expertise like we do of working with Alice River and Australia’s unique water storage needs.

Southern Cross has been home to more than 5 decades of innovation when it comes to Bolted Steel Round Water Tanks, with our first model being built in the late 60s
When the first Squatter Tanks – some of which still stand today – were implemented in Australia, it gave people an inexpensive and functional way of capturing storing large volumes of water.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the first Southern Cross windmill rolled out of the Toowoomba Foundry over a hundred years ago, there was no way the Griffiths family anticipated the brand to grow to become an Australian icon, and still operating in the 21st century.

As an Australian owned brand who still operate out of Loganholme to this day, Southern Cross is proud to help all manner of Australians with their water storage needs, from farms and irrigators to commercial sites and mine projects.
Reliable in a pinch

In 2015 at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a water tank built by one of our competitors suffered a structural failure, leading the tank to burst, flooding somewhere around 2.5 million litres of water to flood Kawana Way, causing destruction, and even washing away a family vehicle.

After this, the site developer contacted Southern Cross to engineer and build two new tanks for the site, and the quality of these tanks have become a yardstick for many commercial projects from that point to comply with.
