Situated some 14km South West of Mackay, Walkerston experiences similar weather, despite being slightly further inland, with long warm summers, and mild dry winters.

The rainfall in Walkerston is more than plentiful, averaging over 1600mm annually, thanks to large wet season rainfalls and cyclones that pass by the area.

Despite the bountiful rainfall, Walkerston experiences a large number of clear or sunny days all year round, which is what would have made it so attractive to Maltese farmers setting up their lives in the area in the late 1800’s.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, servicing Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to business on commercial sites – even educational institutions.

Reliable in a pinch

When a water tank constructed by one of our competitors at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffered structural failure in 2015, the tank ruptured, inundating Kawana Way with approximately two and a half million litres of water, resulting in damaging flooding, and even sweeping away a family vehicle.

Following this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to build two new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the standard for many commercial projects from that point onward.

Walkerston Local Knowledge

Hotels were once the backbone of Walkerston, like many towns, Walkerston already had three hotels in town by the late 1800’s. The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel is the only one in its original building, first erected in 1882.
