Pittsworth Water Tanks

For water tanks Pittsworth can rely on, Southern Cross have been there to supply reliable water storage solutions for over a century.
Locals of Pittsworth know that they have the support of one of Australia’s most recognisable names in water harvesting and water storage solutions.
The populace of Queensland are mindful of their water storage requirements, and due to this, many still turn to a Southern Cross water tank to support them in meeting their water harvesting needs.
The town of Pittsworth sprung up around a hotel, known as the Beauaraba, after which it was named until 11915, when the name was changed to honour a family that took up residence in the region in 1854.

Water Storage Challenges

While rain is looked forward to in many areas across Queensland, excessive rain in a short period of time can build up on roads and paving, causing flash flooding, which can damage homes, property, and the local environment.
If you set up a water tank and connect it up to a guttering system, you can help lessen the build up of water from rainwater run off, and reduce the risk of flash flooding.
Built neighbouring a flood plain, Pittsworth often finds itself at risk of storm water run off when heavy seasonal rains or cyclonic rainfall passes through the region.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer

Australia is well-known for its long hot summers, but unfortunately this leaves us prone to regular bushfires and Pittsworth is no exception. While a lot of the area’s rainfall does fall in the summer months, this produces lush grasses that can easily ignite on the hotter days. In 2016, the iconic Pittsworth Hotel, pictured above, was lost in a blaze.

The good news is, Southern Cross are the fire tank specialists, and can fit your home or commercial space with a fire tank to protect your property at the time of wildfires.
If a bushfire has passed through your property, it is encouraged that you get your water quality tested for safety if you wish to carry on using it for household water. However it will still be safe for gardening or fire security.
The Pittsworth climate
Pittsworth is located in a humid subtropical climate zone, resulting in warm, humid and wet summers, with drier cooler winters. The town also neighbours the alluvium floodplains of the Darling Downs.
The Pittsworth region nets 700mm of average annual rainfall, keeping the floodplains plentiful and provides for some of the best quality grains and cotton in Australia.
Pittsworth today remains an agricultural hub for the region, with the water from the floodplains also proving incredibly useful as an irrigation source for growers and graziers.

Over 100 years of experience
In 1903, the original Southern Cross windmill was manufactured by the Griffiths family at the Toowoomba Foundry, and soon after so was the first Southern Cross water tank, leaving us with unparalleled expertise in dealing with towns like Pittsworth’s water storage needs.
Our first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank was built in the late 60’s, and since then Southern Cross has been home to more than 50 years of continued innovation.
The first Squatter Tanks provided Australians with effecting and cost effective ways of capturing and storing large amounts of water– a number of these tanks still endure today!
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

There was no way anyone could have forecast the birth of an Australian icon when the Griffiths family watched the very first windmill roll off the Toowoomba Foundry line over a hundred years ago.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, servicing Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to business on industrial sites– even schools and universities.
Reliable in a pinch

In 2015, a water storage tank at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital sustained a structiral failure, causing the tank to flood the nearby Kawana Way with approximately two and a half million litres of water, washing away a family vehicle and causing destruction to the surroundings.

Following this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to construct a pair of new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the standard for many commercial projects from that point forward.

Pittsworth Local Knowledge

Each year the town hosts the Pittsworth sprints, an annual car show attracting drivers and car enthusiasts from around the country.

One time words fastest athlete Arthur Postle, known as the “Crimson Flash”, hailed from Pittsworth, and the local museum is home to a display of memorabilia honouring him.
