Water Storage Challenges

While rain is most welcome in many areas across Queensland, too much rain in a short period of time can build up on roads and paving, triggering flash flooding, which can damage dwellings, assets, and the local ecosystem.
By installing a roof gutter system, and connecting it up to a rainwater tank, you can help prevent large amount of storm water run-off and minimise the risk of flash flooding.
In 2013, as more than 500mm of rain fell on Mount Morgan, fears of rainwater runoff causing toxic materials to flood out of the local mines rose.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer

Unfortunately the long hot summers in Rockhampton leave it, similar to much of Australia, prone to extensive bushfires. Even with the fact that much of Mount Morgan’s rainfall comes in the warmer months, this often leads to long grasses which ignite easily.

Thankfully, at Southern Cross we consider ourselves specialists when it comes to fire tanks, and we can provide your property or home with a sufficient fire tank to help safeguard you from bushfires.
In the aftermath of a bushfire it is advised to get your water examined for safety if you’re going to be utilizing it for potable or drinking water. Having said that it will still be safe to use for watering the garden or fire security.
The Mount Morgan climate
Mount Morgan sits in an oceanic climate region, with warm but not hot summers, and cool but not cold winters, with an average of 199 sunny days a year.
Mount Morgan receives adequate rainfall, though slightly less than its coastal neighbours, with most of this rainfall coming in the summer months.
Originally a gold mining town, the last mine in Mount Morgan closed in the 80’s, with much of the nearby land now being used for cattle and poultry.

Over 100 years of experience
Over a century ago, the first Southern Cross water tank was manufactured by the Griffiths family, after they had experienced success with their Southern Cross windmills in 1903. This gives Southern Cross unique perspective and expertise in handling Australian and Mount Morgan water storage requirements.
In the late 60’s, we built the first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank, and have embraced over half a centuty of innovation and improvement since then.
Squatter Tanks were an innovative way for Australians to store vast amounts of water in an effecting and cost-efficient manner – a number of these tanks are still standing to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the Southern Cross brand was born of the Toowoomba Foundry, there was no way the Griffiths family could have anticipated the brand going on the become an iconic Australian business, still operation over a hundred years later.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, assisting Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to business on industrial sites – even schools and universities.
Reliable in a pinch
In 2015, a water storage tank at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital sustained a structural failure, causing the tank to flood the nearby Kawana Way with somewhere around two and a half million litres of water, washing away a family car and causing destruction to the surroundings.
In the wake of this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to build a pair of new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the standard for many commercial projects from that point onward.
