Mareeba Water Tanks

For more than 100 years, Southern Cross Water have been offering water tanks Mareeba residents can put faith in.
People from Mareeba can sleep soundly, knowing they have the support of one of Australia’s most iconic water storage and harvesting companies.
Many Queensland residents still look to a Southern Cross water tank to help meet their water storage needs, because they are mindful of their water storage requirements, and reliability.
As the sign in the image below indicates, Mareeba is proud of its 300 sunny days a year, located about an hour inland from Cairns.

Water Storage Challenges

Despite many people still delighting in rainfall, due to modern infrastructure, like bitumen and concrete, large amounts of rain can build up, causing flash flooding, which can cause damage to homes and the environment.
By attaching a roof gutter system, and connecting it up to a rainwater tank, you can help prevent large amount of storm water run-off and minimise the risk of flash flooding.
In March of 2018 schools were forced to shut down, and roads faced closures as floodwaters rushed through the Mareeba shire, as heavy rainfall saw Lake Tinaroo Dam rise by almost 10% in less than 24 hours.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer
Unfortunately, thanks to most of Australia’s climate, bushfires are a steady risk in the long, hot summers, and Mareeba is no different. Despite most of the region’s rainfall coming in the summer months, the lush grasses and hot days can quickly cause brushfires in the drier winter months.
Fortunately, Southern Cross are the fire tank professionals, and can effectively and proficiently fit your property or home with a fire tank to help protect you from wildfires.
After a bushfire travels through your property, Southern Cross recommends that you have your water tank tested for water safety if you’re intending to continue using it for drinkable water. It will continue to be safe for fire protection or gardening.
The Mareeba climate
Despite being in far North Queensland, and located in a Tropical Savanna Climate, Mareeba famously boasts 300 sunny days a year, and pleasant temperatures that have never exceeded 40 degrees.
Mareeba is located in what is known as a rain shadow, thanks to sitting on the far side of a range, and experiences far less rainfall than surrounding areas at just 871mm annually, still more than other states capital cities such as Perth, Adelaide or Melbourne, however significantly less than Brisbane and neighbouring Cairns.
The climate in Mareeba makes it ideal for growing crops with a wide variety of fruit, nuts and vegetables grown in the region. The rich soil and grasses also makes cattle and poultry common in the area.

Over 100 years of experience
From the very first Southern Cross windmill coming off the Toowoomba Foundry line in 1903, and the original Southern Cross Water Tank over 100 years ago, nobody has expertise like we do of working with Mareeba and Australia’s unique water storage needs.
Southern Cross has been home to more than 5 decades of innovation when it comes to Bolted Steel Round Water Tanks, with our first model being built in the late 60s
Squatter Tanks were a revolutionary way for Australians to store vast quantities of water in an effecting and affordable manner – a number of these tanks are still standing to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the Griffiths family created the Southern Cross brand out of the Toowoomba Foundry, they almost certainly didn’t know that it would go on to become such an iconic Australian brand, still in operation over a hundred years in the future.

Southern Cross is proud to remain Australian owned and operated, with our head office still located in Loganholme, and supporting all type of Australians, from urban commercial sites, to schools and universities, to growers, rural families and irrigators.
Reliable in a pinch

In 2015, a water storage tank at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffered a structural failure, causing the tank to flood the nearby Kawana Way with somewhere around two and a half million litres of water, washing away a family vehicle and causing damage to the surroundings.

After this, the site developer reached out to Southern Cross to engineer and build two new tanks for the site, and the quality of these tanks have become a yardstick for many commercial projects from that point to comply with.

Mareeba Local Facts
