In March of 2018 schools were forced to shut down, and roads faced closures as floodwaters rushed through the Mareeba shire, as heavy rainfall saw Lake Tinaroo Dam rise by almost 10% in less than 24 hours.

Mareeba is located in what is known as a rain shadow, thanks to sitting on the far side of a range, and experiences far less rainfall than surrounding areas at just 871mm annually, still more than other states capital cities such as Perth, Adelaide or Melbourne, however significantly less than Brisbane and neighbouring Cairns.

The climate in Mareeba makes it ideal for growing crops with a wide variety of fruit, nuts and vegetables grown in the region. The rich soil and grasses also makes cattle and poultry common in the area.

Reliable in a pinch

In 2015, a water storage tank at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffered a structural failure, causing the tank to flood the nearby Kawana Way with somewhere around two and a half million litres of water, washing away a family vehicle and causing damage to the surroundings.

After this, the site developer reached out to Southern Cross to engineer and build two new tanks for the site, and the quality of these tanks have become a yardstick for many commercial projects from that point to comply with.

Mareeba Local Facts

Tobacco was once the main local crop of the Mareeba region, but is no longer grown within the shire boundaries.

Mareeba and the surrounding region is home to the Mareeba rock-wallaby, a rare species of rock-wallably found only in the Mareeba area.
