Installing a rainwater tank, with a connected roof gutter system can help in reducing the amount of rainwater run-off and help reduce the risk of flash flooding.
In 2017, Dysart and several neighbouring towns were isolated as floodwaters from Cyclone Debbie cut off access-ways to the towns.

Australia is well-known for its long hot summers, but unfortunately this leaves us prone to regular bushfires and Dysart is no exception. Although a lot of the area’s rainfall does fall in the summer months, this results in lush grasses that can easily burn on the hotter days.

The Dysart climate
Dysart is home to a semi-arid, or local steppe climate, with plentiful sunshine and sporadic rainfall. Sitting some 228m above sea level, it is too far inland for much of the wet season rainfall to reach.
Annually, Dysart clocks in at an average rainfall of 619mm, making reliable water storage more important than ever.
Despite being primarily a coal mining town, Dysart’s flat grasslands also serve as great fodder for grazing of sheep and cattle.

Over 100 years of experience
In 1903, the original Southern Cross windmill was manufactured by the Griffiths family at the Toowoomba Foundry, and soon after so was the first Southern Cross water tank, leaving us with unparalleled expertise in dealing with towns like Dysart’s water storage needs.
In the late 60’s, we built the first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank, and have welcomed over half a century of innovation and development since then.
When Squatter Tanks were introduced to Australia, it equipped people with a reliable and affordable way of storing substantial amounds of water, and several of these tanks still stand to this day.

When the Griffiths family created the Southern Cross brand out of the Toowoomba Foundry, they almost certainly didn’t know that it would go on to end up being such an iconic Australian brand, still in operation over a hundred years in the future.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, assisting Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to companies on commercial sites– even educational institutions.
Reliable in a pinch
When a water tank constructed by one of our competitors at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffered structural failure in 2015, the tank ruptured, flooding Kawana Way with approximately two and a half million litres of water, resulting in damaging flooding, and even sweeping away a family car.

After this, the site developer reached out to Southern Cross to engineer and build two new tanks for the site, and the quality of these tanks have become a benchmark for many commercial projects from that point to comply with.

Dysart Local Knowledge

One of the town’s main attractions is the restored Mt Orange Copper Smelter chimney, of which the original structure was erected in 1879 to treat ore from nearby mines. It closed in 1910, some 60 years before Dysart was founded.
