Water Storage Challenges

Despite many people still delighting in rainfall, due to modern infrastructure, like bitumen and concrete, large amounts of rain can build up, causing flash flooding, which can cause damage to homes and the environment.

Setting up a rainwater tank, with a connected roof gutter system can help in reducing the amount of rainwater run-off and help lower the possibility of flash flooding.

Condamine was evacuated once in 2010 and twice in 2011 as floods endangered the town due to stormwater runoff paired with the Condamine River breaking its banks.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer

Unfortunately the long hot summers in Condamine leave it, like much of Australia, vulnerable to widespread bushfires. Despite the fact that much of Condamine’s rainfall comes in the warmer months, this often results in long grasses which ignite easily.

Southern Cross Water are specialists when it relates to fire tanks, and can install a fire tank for your home or industrial space to help protect your property in the event of bushfire.
If a bushfire has passed through your property, it is advised that you get your water quality examined for safety if you wish to carry on using it for household water. Having said that it will still be safe for gardening or fire protection.
The Condamine climate
Located right in the middle of the Western Downs region, Condamine is blessed with hot summers, and cool winters, with much of the humidity and rainfall not making it over the nearby Darling Range.
Condamine typically gets around 600mm annual rainfall, much of which falls in the summer, with the winters typically being dry and cool.
The expansive grasses and land in the Condamine area makes it ideal for livestock, and it his home to many graziers.

Over 100 years of experience
In 1903, the original Southern Cross windmill was manufactured by the Griffiths family at the Toowoomba Foundry, and soon after so was the first Southern Cross water tank, leaving us with unparalleled experience in taking care of towns like Condamine’s water storage needs.
Our first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank was built in the late 60’s, and since then Southern Cross has been home to over 5 decades of ongoing innovation.
When Squatter Tanks were introduced to Australia, it provided people with an effective and economical way of storing large amounts of water, and several of these tanks still stand to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the first Southern Cross windmill rolled out of the Toowoomba Foundry over a hundred years ago, there was no chance the Griffiths family expected the brand to grow to become an Australian icon, and still operating in the 21st century.

Southern Cross is proud to remain Australian owned and operated, with our head office still located in Loganholme, and supporting all manner of Australians, from urban commercial sites, to schools and universities, to farmers, rural families and irrigators.
Reliable in a pinch

In 2015, a water storage tank at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffered a structural failure, causing the tank to flood the close-by Kawana Way with somewhere around two and a half million litres of water, washing away a family car and causing damage to the surroundings.

Following this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to build two new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the benchmark for many commercial projects from that point forward.
