Yeppoon, much like the rest of the Capricorn Coast, hosts a humid subtropical climate, experiencing hot summers without the extreme humidity of localities to the north, and mild, drier winters.

Yeppoon experiences a modest 981mm of rainfall annually, with the majority of this falling in the summer months, but an average of  more than 29mm even in the driest months.

The warmth and sufficient rainfall in Yeppoon made it the perfect place for sugar plantations, which later transitioned into other tropical fruits, such as mangoes and bananas as the blackbirding practices came to an end. Yeppoon also supports a moderate cattle grazing and fishing industry.

Disaster struck the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in 2015, when a water tank built by one of our rivals suffered a catastrophic structural failure, rupturing the tanks and washing approximately 2.5 million litres of destructive water over Kawana way, even sweeping away a family car.

After this disaster, the sites developer looked to Southern Cross to design and construct two new water storage tanks for the site, and the requirements and quality these tanks had to conform to set the standard for many subsequent commercial projects.

Yeppoon was given its name from a local indigenous word, meaning thunder or the roar of the surf.

In the early days of the Capricorn Coast, Emu Park and Yeppoon shared somewhat of a rivalry, with the more elite members of the Rockhampton and Mount Morgan areas gravitating to Emu Park, while the more “common folk” from mining areas were more likely to gravitate toward Yeppoon.
