Miles is occasionally effected also by the flooding of Dogwood Creek and the Condamine River.

Due to Australia’s climate of long hot summers, bushfires are a constant threat, and Miles is no exception. Despite much of the rainfall coming in the summer months, this can result in longer grasses which easily catch alight.

After a bushfire passes through your property, Southern Cross encourages that you have your water tank assessed for water safety if you’re intending to continue using it for drinkable water. It will remain safe for fire protection or gardening.
The Miles climate
Located in the Western Downs, Miles has hot summers, and cool winters, with much of the humidity and rainfall not making it over the Darling Range.
Miles typically gets around 600mm annual rainfall, much of which falls in the warmer months, with the winters typically being dry and cool.
The rich clay and sunny weather makes Miles ideal for a range of agricultural purposes, with the local economy being heavily rooted in livestock and crops, as well as a modest timber production industry.

Over 100 years of experience
Over 100 years ago, the first Southern Cross water tank was manufactured by the Griffiths family, after they had experienced success with their Southern Cross windmills in 1903. This gives Southern Cross one-of-a-kind perspective and experience in dealing with Australian and Miles water storage requirements.
In the late 60’s, we built the first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank, and have welcomed over half a century of innovation and improvement since then.
The first Squatter Tanks provided Australians with effecting and affordable ways of capturing and storing large amounts of water– some of these tanks still stand today!
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy
There was not a chance anyone could have predicted the birth of an Australian icon when the Griffiths family watched the very first windmill roll off the Toowoomba Foundry line over a century ago.

Not only does Southern Cross still operate out of Loganholme, we are an Australian owned company, servicing Australians from all walks of life, including irrigators, families, schools and many more.
Reliable in a pinch
In 2015 at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a water tank built by one of our rivals suffered a structural failure, leading the tank to burst, flooding approximately 2.5 million litres of water to flood Kawana Way, causing wreckage, and even washing away a family car.

Following this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to construct a pair of new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the benchmark for many commercial projects from that point forward.
