Water Storage Challenges

Despite many people still delighting in rainfall, due to modern infrastructure, like bitumen and concrete, large amounts of rain can build up, causing flash flooding, which can cause damage to homes and the environment.

By installing a roof gutter system, and linking it up to a rainwater tank, you can help prevent large amount of storm water run-off and moderate the possibility of flash flooding.
As recently as 2017 and 2020 Sarina experienced widespread flash flooding as a result of thunderstorms in the area causing large volumes of water to build up on roads and in rivers.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer

Sadly the long hot summers in Sarina leave it, like much of Australia, prone to wide-spread bushfires. Despite the fact that much of Sarina’s rainfall comes in the summer, this often leads to long grasses which burn easily.

Nevertheless, Southern Cross are the fire tank professionals, and can effectively and efficiently fit your property or residence with a fire tank to help protect you from wildfires.
If your property is impacted by a bushfire, we reccomend that you get your water assessed for safety before continuing to use it for potable or drinking purposes. The tank will still be suitable for watering gardens or fire protection.
The Sarina climate
Home to hot and wet summers, and mild dry winters, like much of its surrounds Sarina has a humid subtropical climate, with spring and winter often drier combined than wet season months

Sarina experiences a high annual rainfall due to its subtropical position, with temperatures rarely venturing above 35 degrees.

Sarina, like many other towns in the Mackay region, is a large producer of sugarcane. The Sarina area is also home to some cattle grazing and agriculture industry.

Over 100 years of experience

Over a century ago, the first Southern Cross water tank was manufactured by the Griffiths family, after they had experienced success with their Southern Cross windmills in 1903. This gives Southern Cross unique perspective and experience in dealing with Australian and Sarina water storage requirements.

Our first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank was built in the late 60’s, and ever since Southern Cross has been home to more than 5 decades of continued innovation.
Squatter Tanks were a cutting edge way for Australians to store vast amounts of water in an effecting and affordable manner – some of these tanks are still standing to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the very first Southern Cross windmill rolled out of the Toowoomba Foundry over an a century ago, there was no chance the Griffiths family expected the brand to grow to emerge as an Australian icon, and still operating in the 21st century.

Southern Cross is proud to be Australian owned and operated, with our head office still located in Loganholme, and helping all manner of Australians, from urban commercial sites, to schools and universities, to growers, rural families and irrigators.
Reliable in a pinch

In 2015 at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a water tank built by one of our rivals suffered a structural failure, leading the tank to rupture, flooding somewhere around 2.5 million litres of water to flood Kawana Way, causing wreckage, and even washing away a family vehicle.

In the wake of the misfortune, the developer of the University Hospital site enlisted Southern Cross to engineer and manufacture two new water storage tanks for the site, and the high standard engineering for those tanks has since become a measure for future commercial projects to comply to.
