Much of the Sunshine Coast receives a lot of rain, especially in the wet season, and Palmwoods is no different. In the 2013 floods that brought Brisbane to a halt, Palmwoods also experienced widespread flooding and storm damage.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer
Unfortunately the long hot summers in Palmwoods leave it, similar to much of Australia, prone to wide-spread bushfires. Despite the fact that much of Palmwoods’ rainfall comes in the warmer months, this often results in long grasses which ignite easily.
Southern Cross Water are experts when it comes to fire tanks, and can install a fire tank for your home or industrial space to help defend your property in the event of bushfire.
If a bushfire has passed through your property, it is advised that you get your water quality examined for safety if you wish to continue using it for household water. However it will still be safe for gardening or fire protection.
The Palmwoods climate
Palmwoods, typical of most towns on the Sunshine Coast, and throughout South East Queensland, sits in a humid subtropical climate region. This results in wet mild winters, and wetter hot summers.
The nearest weather measuring station, in Nambour averages over 1600mm of rainfall each year, with no month averaging less than 50mm of rainfall, and three months averaging over 200mm.
This plentiful rainfall, and tropical climate made Palmwoods an ideal location for pineapple plantations, and is famous for its Piccabeen Palm groves after which the town was named.

When the Southern Cross brand was born of the Toowoomba Foundry, there was no little chance the Griffiths family could have foreseen the brand going on the become an iconic Australian business, still operation over a hundred years later.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, assisting Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to business on industrial sites– even educational institutions.
Reliable in a pinch

In 2015 at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a water tank built by one of our competitors suffered a structural failure, causing the tank to burst, flooding approximately 2.5 million litres of water to flood Kawana Way, causing damage, and even washing away a family car.

In the wake of the disaster, the developer of the University Hospital site enlisted Southern Cross to engineer and manufacture two new water storage tanks for the site, and the high standard engineering for those tanks has since become a measure for future commercial projects to comply to.

Palmwoods Local Knowledge

Before being renamed to Palmwoods thanks to the Piccabeen Palm groves in the area, the town was originally called Merriman Flats.

The famous pub in town, popular with locals and tourists alike, is over 100 years old, having been built in 1902.
