Water Storage Challenges

While rain is looked forward to in many areas across Queensland, too much rain in a short period of time can build up on roads and paving, resulting in flash flooding, which can harm houses, property, and the local ecosystem.
Installing a rainwater tank, with a connected roof gutter system can help in reducing the amount of rainwater run-off and help minimise the possibility of flash flooding.
In the early 2010’s, the Fraser Coast region experienced three major floods in the space of three years, leading to a new disaster management plan.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer
Unfortunately the long hot summers in Oakhurst leave it, like much of Australia, prone to wide-spread bushfires. Despite the fact that much of Oakhurst’s rainfall comes in the warmer months, this often leads to long grasses which burn easily.
Thankfully, at Southern Cross we consider ourselves specialists when it comes to fire tanks, and we can fit your property or home with an adequate fire tank to help safeguard you from bushfires.
If a bushfire has passed through your property, it is encouraged that you get your water quality checked for safety if you wish to continue using it for household water. Having said that it will still be safe for gardening or fire security.
The Oakhurst climate
Oakhurst is in a humid subtropical climate region, with warm, humid and wet summers accompanying mild winters. Unlike its neighbours to the North, Maryborough often reaches temperatures exceeding 35 degrees in summer.
Like many cities and towns in Queensland, most of Oakhurst’s rainfall comes in the summer months, with the wet season from December to March accounting for roughly half of the annual precipitation.
The banks of the river and warm climate makes Oakhurst ideal for growing sugarcane, as well as grazing livestock.

Over 100 years of experience

Over a century ago, the first Southern Cross water tank was manufactured by the Griffiths family, after they had experienced success with their Southern Cross windmills in 1903. This gives Southern Cross one-of-a-kind perspective and experience in handling Australian and Oakhurst’s water storage requirements.

In the late 60’s, we built the first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank, and have embraced over half a century of innovation and development since then.
When Squatter Tanks were introduced to Australia, it equipped individuals with a reliable and affordable way of storing substantial amounds of water, and several of these tanks still remain to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the first Southern Cross windmill rolled out of the Toowoomba Foundry over an a century ago, there was no way the Griffiths family expected the brand to grow to emerge as an Australian icon, and still operating in the 21st century.

Not only does Southern Cross still operate out of Murarrie, we are an Australian owned company, servicing Australians from all walks of life, such as irrigators, families, schools and many more.
Reliable in a pinch

When a water tank constructed by one of our competitors at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffered structural failure in 2015, the tank ruptured, inundating Kawana Way with approximately two and a half million litres of water, resulting in damaging flooding, and even sweeping away a family vehicle.

In the wake of this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to construct a pair of new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the standard for many commercial projects from that point forward.
