Rain is a welcome sight for many people across/ statename/, but due to modern conveniences such as roads and paving, excessive rain can lead to flash flooding, causing damage to homes and the ecosystem.

If you install a water tank and link it up to a guttering system, you can help lessen the build up of water from rainwater run off, and reduce the risk of flash flooding.

The Middlemount area receives a very small amount rain, increasing the importance of water storage to provide reliable access to clean fresh water.

Unfortunately, due to most of Australia’s climate, bushfires are a constant risk in the long, hot summers, and Middlemount is no different. Despite most of the region’s rainfall coming in the summer months, the lush grasses and hot days can easily cause brushfires.

Thankfully, at Southern Cross we consider ourselves experts when it comes to fire tanks, and we can fit your property or home with a sufficient fire tank to help protect you from bushfires.

After a bushfire passes through your property, Southern Cross recommends that you have your water tank tested for water safety if you’re going to continue using it for potable water. It will remain safe for fire protection or gardening.

The Middlemount climate

Middlemount, like many of the coal mining towns nearby, has a mid-latitude steppe climate, with varied temperatures, and little rainfall throughout the year.

Because of this, Middlemount has mild dry winters, and mild to hot summers, with the temperature regularly in the high 30s.

Due to this poor climate, and Middlemount having been born a mining town, there is very little agriculture or farming in the area, with the town’s economy based around the nearby coal mines.

The mining tank specialists

At Southern Cross we pride ourselves in the design and integrity of our mining tanks. We specialise in the design, manufacture, installation and servicing of water storage systems for the Australian mining industry.

Every one of our tanks are designed and engineered in-house, and can be engineered for all applications, including high wind and cyclonic locations, and even certain seismic conditions.

Tanks that comply to supplementary international process water and fire codes can be designed and supplied to certain customer requirements.

Over 100 years of experience

Over 100 years ago, the first Southern Cross water tank was manufactured by the Griffiths family, after they had experienced success with their Southern Cross windmills in 1903. This gives Southern Cross unique perspective and expertise in dealing with Australian and Middlemount water storage requirements.

Our first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank was built in the late 60’s, and since then Southern Cross has been home to over 50 years of continued innovation.

When Squatter Tanks were introduced to Australia, it armed people with an effective and affordable way of storing large quantities of water, and some of these tanks still stand to this day.

As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the first Southern Cross windmill rolled out of the Toowoomba Foundry over a hundred years ago, there was no way the Griffiths family expected the brand to grow to become an Australian icon, and still operating in the 21st century.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, servicing Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to companies on industrial sites– even schools and universities.

Reliable in a pinch

Disaster struck the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in 2015, when a water tank built by one of our competitors suffured a catastrophic structural failure, bursting the tanks and rushing approximately 2.5 million litres of destructive water over Kawana way, even sweeping away a family car.

After this, the site developer contacted Southern Cross to engineer and build two new tanks for the site, and the quality of these tanks have become a benchmark for many commercial projects from that point to comply with.

Middlemount Fact

Despite its status as a born and bred mining town, Middlemount has grown its own town centre, with a post office, gym and shopping centre.
