Blackwater Water Tanks

For water tanks Blackwater can depend on, Southern Cross have been there to supply quality water storage solutions for over a hundred years.
People from Blackwater can sleep comfortably, knowing they have the backing of one of Australia’s most renowned water storage and harvesting companies.

Many Queensland residents still count on a Southern Cross water tank to help meet their water storage needs, because they understand their water storage needs, and integrity.

Blackwater derives its name from the Blackwater Creek, which was once observed to run black with water from nearby coal deposits.

Water Storage Challenges

While rain is most welcome in many areas across Queensland, too much rain in a short period of time can build up on roads and paving, leading to flash flooding, which can damage homes, property, and the local ecosystem.

Installing a roof gutter system and a rainwater tank can help in reducing the amount of water building up from stormwater run-off, and lessen the risk of flash flooding.

The Blackwater area receives little rain, meaning water storage is always of paramount importance, to ensure access to clean, fresh water.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer

Sadly the long hot summers in Blackwater leave it, like much of Australia, prone to widespread bushfires. Despite the fact that much of Blackwater’s limited rainfall comes in the warmer months, this often leads to long grasses which ignite easily.

Thankfully, at Southern Cross we consider ourselves experts when it comes to fire tanks, and we can fit your property or home with a sufficient fire tank to help protect you from bushfires.
If a bushfire has passed through your property, it is advised that you get your water quality tested for safety if you wish to continue using it for household water. However it will still be safe for gardening or fire security.
The Blackwater climate

Blackwater has what is referred to as a local steppe or mid-latitude steppe climate, with low levels of rainfall throughout the year and varied temperatures.

This climate causes Blackwater to have mild to hot summers, and mild dry winters. Due to this there is not much agriculture in the area.
Despite a lack of agriculture and rainfall, Blackwater has sustained a steady population for over 150 years due to its plentiful coal mining resources.

Why Choose Southern Cross Water?

For over fifty years, Southern Cross has been providing high quality steel bolted storage tanks to Australians, and all of our tanks have a 30+ year design life.

Our water storage tanks are backed by over a century of successful tank design and Australian innovation.

The mining tank specialists

At Southern Cross we pride ourselves in the design and integrity of our mining tanks. We are experts in the design, fabrication, installation and servicing of water storage systems for the Australian mining industry.

We manufacture, engineer and design all of our water tanks in house, and we can design them for specific applications, including some seismic conditions, and high-wind and cyclonic settings.
We can also design and manufacture tanks that adhere to international process water, or fire codes if needed.
Over 100 years of experience

In 1903, the original Southern Cross windmill was manufactured by the Griffiths family at the Toowoomba Foundry, and soon shortly after so was the first Southern Cross water tank, leaving us with unparalleled experience in dealing with towns like Blackwater’s water storage needs.

Our first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank was built in the late 60’s, and since then Southern Cross has been home to over 5 decades of continued innovation.
Squatter Tanks were a revolutionary way for Australians to store vast quantities of water in an effecting and affordable manner – some of these tanks are still standing to this very day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

There was no way anyone could have predicted the birth of an Australian icon when the Griffiths family watched the very first windmill roll off the Toowoomba Foundry line over a century ago.

Southern Cross is proud to be Australian owned and operated, with our head office still located in Loganholme, and assisting all manner of Australians, from urban commercial sites, to schools and universities, to farmers, rural families and irrigators.
Reliable in a pinch

In 2015 at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a water tank built by one of our competitors suffered a structural failure, causing the tank to burst, flooding approximately 2.5 million litres of water to flood Kawana Way, causing destruction, and even washing away a family car.

In the wake of this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to build two new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the standard for many commercial projects from that point forward.

Blackwater Fact

There has been prosperous coal mining operations in the Blackwater region for over 150 years, since Ludwig Leichhardt discovered coal deposits on an expedition in 1845. Over the years over 100 000 people are estimated to have been employed in mines in the Blackwater region.
