Rain is a welcome sight for many people across Queensland, but due to modern conveniences such as roads and paving, excessive rain can result in flash flooding, damaging homes and the ecosystem.
If you install a water tank and link it up to a guttering system, you can help lessen the build up of water from rainwater run off, and reduce the risk of flash flooding.
In 2009, the Fairbarn dam overflowed, just a few days before the Nogoa River burst its banks, causing flooding and damaging hundreds of homes in the area.

Regrettably, due to most of Australia’s climate, bushfires are a constant risk in the long, hot summers, and Emerald is no different. Despite most of the region’s rainfall coming in the summer months, the lush grasses and hot days can easily cause brushfires.

Thankfully, Southern Cross are the fire tank experts, and can fit your home or commercial space with a fire tank to protect your property at the time of wildfires.
If a bushfire has passed through your property, it is recommended that you get your water quality tested for safety if you wish to continue using it for household water. However it will still be safe for gardening or fire security.
The Emerald climate
Emerald is home to a humid subtropical climate, with mild dry winters and warm to hot summers, no stranger to temperatures over 40 degrees.
Like much of it’s neighbouring region, much of Emerald’s rainfall comes in summer, with almost half of its annual 640mm of rain falling from December to February.
Despite having low rainfall figures, Emerald lies on the Nagoa River, and neighbours Lake Maraboon, keeping the area fertile for growers. The area is predominantly used to grow grains, citrus and cotton.

The mining tank specialists

At Southern Cross we pride ourselves in the design and integrity of our mining tanks. We are experts in the design, fabrication, installation and servicing of water storage systems for the Australian mining industry.

Every one of our tanks are designed and engineered in-house, and can be engineered for all applications, including high wind and cyclonic locations, and even certain seismic conditions.
Southern Cross can also provide tanks that meet international fire and process water codes if called for under special circumstances.
Over 100 years of experience
Im 1903, the original Southern Cross windmill was manufactured by the Griffiths family at the Toowoomba Foundry, and soon after so was the first Southern Cross water tank, leaving us with unparalleled experience in dealing with towns like Emerald’s water storage needs.
In the late 60’s, we built the original Bolted Steel Round Water Tank, and have welcomed over fifty years of innovation and improvement since then.
When Squatter Tanks were introduced to Australia, it supplied people with an effective and affordable way of storing large amounts of water, and some of these tanks still stand to this day.
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

When the Griffiths family formed the Southern Cross brand out of the Toowoomba Foundry, they certainly didn’t know that it would go on to become such an iconic Australian brand, still in operation over a hundred years later.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, servicing Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to companies on industrial sites– even schools and universities.
Reliable in a pinch

In 2015, a water storage tank at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffered a structiral failure, causing the tank to flood the nearby Kawana Way with approximately two and a half million litres of water, washing away a family car and causing damage to the surroundings.

After this, the site developer contacted Southern Cross to engineer and build two new tanks for the site, and the quality of these tanks have become a benchmark for many commercial projects from that point to comply with.

The nearby Fairbarn Dam, which holds back the waters of Lake Maraboon, when full, holds three times more water than the Sydney Harbour.
