Rain is a refreshing sight for many people across Queensland, but due to modern conveniences such as roads and paving, significant rain can bring about flash flooding, damaging homes and the ecosystem.
If you install a water tank and connect it up to a guttering system, you can help reduce the build up of water from rainwater run off, and lessen the possibility of flash flooding.
Such is the rainfall and risk of flood in Tully, a giant gumboot was erected in in 2003, as a monument to the town’s high rainfall, also serving as a museum, documenting past floods.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer
Australia is renowned for its long hot summers, but unfortunately this leaves us susceptible to frequent bushfires and Tully is no exception. While much of the area’s rainfall does fall in the summer months, this produces lush grasses that can easily ignite on the warmer days.

After a bushfire it is encouraged to get your water checked for safety if you’re going to be using it for potable or drinking water. Having said that it will still be safe to use for watering the garden or fire security.

In a tropical rainforest climate, Tully experiences mild temperatures the year round, with the average max ranging from 31 degrees to 24 degrees, and the average min ranging from 15 to 23 degrees.
Experiencing a whopping 4100mm of rainfall a year on average, Tully is typically in the top two wettest towns in the country. No month has an average of less than 100mm of rainfall, with March averaging an alarming 752mm of rainfall – more than a whole year in Perth.
Sugar cane and bananas are the dominant crops in the area, thanks to the high rainfall and warm temperatures.

All Southern Cross tanks are engineered and designed in house, and if needed can be engineered for unique locations, including cyclonic or high wind settings, and some seismic conditions.
Tanks that comply to additional international fire codes can be designed and supplied to certain customer demands.
Over 100 years of experience

Over a century ago, the first Southern Cross water tank was manufactured by the Griffiths family, after they had experienced success with their Southern Cross windmills in 1903. This gives Southern Cross one-of-a-kind perspective and experience in handling Australian and Tully water storage requirements.

When the Southern Cross brand was born of the Toowoomba Foundry, there was no way the Griffiths family could have anticipated the brand going on the become an iconic Australian company, still operation over a hundred years later.

Southern Cross is an Australian owned brand, and we still operate out of Loganholme to this day, servicing Australians from all walks of life, from rural families, to irrigators, to business on commercial sites– even educational institutions.
Reliable in a pinch

Disaster struck the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in 2015, when a water tank built by one of our rivals suffered a catastrophic structural failure, bursting the tanks and washing approximately 2.5 million litres of destructive water over Kawana way, even sweeping away a family car.

Following this tragedy, the site’s developer turned to Southern Cross to construct two new tanks on the site, and the quality of these Southern Cross tanks served to set the benchmark for many commercial projects from that point onward.

Tully Local Knowledge

The Golden Gumboot is an annual competition between Tully and nearby town Babinda, where the towns compete for the title of wettest Australian town. Although Babinda typically wins, Tully keep live rainfall figures on the Golden Gumboot museum in the town.
