Yarrabah Water Tanks

At Southern Cross we’ve been building and designing water tanks Yarrabah residents can rely on for over a century.
Citizens of Yarrabah know that they have the support of one of Australia’s most recognisable names in water collection and water storage solutions.
Inhabitants of Queensland are mindful of their water storage requirements, and because of this, many have, and still look to a Southern Cross water tank to help meet their water storage needs.
Traditionally Yagaljida in the Yidin language spoken by the local indigenous people, Yarrabah is an indigenous community some 50km out of Cairns.

Water Tank Sizes

With a range of tank sizes from 26kL – 600kL in our rural tanks, and from 12kL – 1900kL in our commercial tanks (with sizes outside this range available on request) you can rest assured that we have the right size tank to suit your water storage needs.

Water Storage Challenges

Rain is often a pleasant sight for many people across Queensland, but as a result of modern conveniences such as roads and paving, significant rain can trigger flash flooding, endangering homes and the ecosystem.
By installing a roof gutter system, and linking it up to a rainwater tank, you can help prevent large amount of storm water run-off and decrease the risk of flash flooding.
As with most areas in Northern Queensland, Yarrabah often comes under threat from seasonal tropical cyclones, which can cause widespread flash flooding, road closures and property damage.
Bushfires and the Australian Summer

Unfortunately, thanks to most of Australia’s climate, bushfires are a steady risk in the long, hot summers, and Yarrabah is no exception. Despite much of the region’s rainfall coming in the summer months, the lush grasses and warm days can quickly result in brushfires.

Fortunately, Southern Cross are the fire tank specialists, and can fit your home or commercial space with a fire tank to offer protection to your property at the time of wildfires.
If your property is impacted by a bushfire, we reccomend that you get your water assessed for safety before continuing to use it for potable or drinking purposes. The tank will still be well-suited for watering gardens or fire protection.
The Yarrabah climate
Yarrabah lies in a tropical monsoon climate region, which results in year round warm temperatures, and large amounts of rainfall in the wet season, with temperatures of 30 degrees or higher common all year.
The tropical monsoonal climate in the area results in a annual rainfall nearing 2000mm, with the vast majority of this typically coming between January and March.
Much of the land in the area, like a lot of Northern Queensland, is used to grow sugarcane.

Over 100 years of experience
The first Southern Cross windmill was produced in the Toowoomba Foundry in 1903, and not far behind was the first Southern Cross water tank, meaning nobody knows the unique storage needs of Yarrabah and Australia like we do.
Our first Bolted Steel Round Water Tank was built in the late 60’s, and since then Southern Cross has been home to more than half a century of continued innovation.
The first Squatter Tanks provided Australians with effecting and cost effective ways of capturing and storing large amounts of water– some of these tanks still endure today!
As Aussie as a meat pie at the footy

There was not a chance anyone could have forecast the birth of an Australian icon when the Griffiths family observed the very first windmill roll off the Toowoomba Foundry line over a century ago.

Not only does Southern Cross still operate out of Loganholme, we are an Australian owned company, helping Australians from all walks of life, including irrigators, families, schools and many more.
Reliable in a pinch
In 2015, a water storage tank at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital sustained a structiral failure, causing the tank to flood the close-by Kawana Way with approximately two and a half million litres of water, washing away a family vehicle and causing damage to the surroundings.
After this, the site developer contacted Southern Cross to engineer and build two new tanks for the site, and the quality of these tanks have become a yardstick for many commercial projects from that point to comply with.

Yarrabah Facts

A ferry used to run from Yarrabah to Cairns, known by locals as a “flatty.” In 2020, the Queensland Government announced plans to install a new Yarrabah Jetty, allowing regular water transport to return to the town.
